Hot Topic | What Myosin Fragmentation is Teaching Us about Exercise and Atrophy

If you coach, train, or treat athletes and patients, you’re aware that skeletal muscle adapts to the balance between building up (protein synthesis) and breaking down (protein breakdown). We’ve gotten remarkably good at measuring the “building up” side through stable isotope tracer methods, with newer methods enabling participants to orally consume them. The “breaking down” […]

Hot Topic | Being Outside Makes You Feel Better

Nature as a therapeutic intervention is a practice that dates back centuries but has only recently gained empirical legitimacy. From Shinrin-yoku (forest bathing) in Japan to green exercise initiatives in urban areas of the United States and Europe, nature-based approaches to health are gaining traction. Mental health disorders, including anxiety, depression, and stress-related conditions, are […]

GSSI Pre-Conference

The Physiology of Hydration: More Than Water Alone

This session explores the physiology of hydration through an integrated lens—examining how carbohydrate, sodium, flavor, and fluid interact to influence intake, absorption, retention, and performance. We’ll review current research on fluid balance, osmotic drivers, and palatability, highlighting mechanisms that underpin voluntary intake and thermoregulation. Attendees will gain insight into individualized strategies, including sweat profiling and timing approaches, to optimize euhydration and mitigate performance decrements associated with >2% body-mass loss. Practical applications will be linked to laboratory- and field-based research, ensuring translation from bench to field. This pre-conference equips you with evidence-based tools to support athlete hydration across diverse environments and sporting contexts.
